New Wastewater Treatment Works to meet future regulatory discharge standards in compliance with the EC Directive Municipal Wastewater Treatment.
The purpose of the scheme is to replace Cookstown WwTW with a new works. The new works includes a new inlet works with band inlet screens and combined storm overflow, primary settlement tanks, Sequential Batch Reactors (SBRs), Storm storage tanks, Sludge holding and thickening facilities, imported sludge and leachate facilities and odour control. The works also includes for river improvement works at the Ballinderry River including the construction of groynes, weirs and the installation of diffuser grids. The new works is designed to treat domestic, sludge and leachate and industrial waste.
This 45,000 PE plant is currently under construction and utilises self-cleaning jet aeration technology in six parallel Sequential Batch Reactor (SBR) basins. The basins are preceded by a band screen, packaged grit and grease removal inlet plant and four primary settlement tanks. The plant also has an odour control system, a SMART technology control panel and a standby generator. The works is being constructed within the confines of the existing Water Service site which was particularly restricted and all or the area was required for the completed new works. To prevent the need for additional land the new works will be a phased construction with the use of a temporary sludge treatment plant to enable the existing sludge tanks to be removed. This temporary sludge plant is operated by the JV Contractor during the duration of the construction and commissioning of the new plant.
