GIRL POWER AT BALLYBOGEY
The major upgrade, which involved the complete overhaul of the existing wastewater treatment system in Ballybogey, has been managed by a team of female engineers from Williams Industrial Services, Ni Water and Doran Consulting.
Mr Tom Picking, Project Director of Williams Industrial Services told us "It's great to see female engineers in our industry, it's unusual to have three girls on one project, but our female engineers are very talented and they have a great rapport with our clients. They certainly bring a new dimension to Williams Industrial Services, which until now has been a predominately male environment."
According to Construction Skills in Northern Ireland, women account for less than 10% of the industry here and the vast majority of them are employed in administrative roles, but at WIS we currently employ two female graduate engineers who have been operating as Project Managers for several years now.
The female engineers on the project management team told us "It's unusual, but encouraging to find so many women working on one project who are all in an engineering role."
The Ballybogey project proved quite a challenge for the girls as they stated "With a very small site footprint to work with, the project has tested not only our engineering ability but also our organisational, communication and design skills, We are delighted to say that our strong team effort has had a positive impact on the programme and has resulted in the project running ahead of schedule."
The Ballybogey WwTw project is now complete, and will be undergoing performance trials in the very near future. The project aim was to deliver environmental benefits for the Co. Antrim village including improved air quality and a higher standard of discharge to local watercourses.
