Water Aid Benefits from Successful Six Peaks Challenge
In July 2006, a team from WIS Ltd took part in the gruelling six peaks challenge to raise £3000.00 for the Water Aid charity.
The challenge involved climbing the six highest peaks of each region of the UK and Ireland and travelling between them by land and sea, all within 72 hours.
The climbers in the team were John and Paula Bell, Gareth Caves and Jason Graham and the road crew were Gavin Rankin and Willie Trainor.
After completing Snaefell in the Isle of Man and Snowdon in Wales without any problems, atrocious conditions made Scafell Pike very difficult with some teams suffering casulaties. From there we made the overnight journey to Ben Nevis for a 5am start. Conditions were also poor at the top of the highest peak in the UK, with no view to reward the efforts of the climbers, but there was no time to linger as there was a ferry to catch to Belfast. Climbing Slieve Donard at midnight under the moonlight with head torches was an unforgettable experience, but the drive afterwards to Co. Kerry was not! Corran Touhail was the last mountain to climb and nasty conditions made the Devil's Ladder difficult to negotiate in both directions, but we made it to the finish without the aid of mountain rescue. Somehow we found the energy to celebrate with the other teams that night in Killarney. I think it is fair to say that neither climbers nor drivers would want to repeat the experience any time soon, but we are delighted to have been successful and to have been able to contribute to such a worthy cause. We are very grateful to our sponsors, thank you for your generosity - you know who you are!
